Crace sits in the Gungahlin district, bounded by the Barton Highway, Gundaroo Drive, Nudurr Drive and Gungahlin Drive, on undulating ground between Giralang and Palmerston. Streets here are named after colonial parishes and land divisions, and almost every home in the suburb went up from 2009 onward, after road construction started in July 2008 and the first display homes were finished in May 2009.

Crace homes run big. In the 2021 Census, 46.6 per cent of dwellings here had four or more bedrooms, well above the ACT figure of 35.8 per cent. That means more wall area, more ceilings and more doors than a typical Canberra repaint, so sequencing the job properly matters if you want to keep living in the house while we work.

Crace sits between two hills, Crace Hill at 622 metres and Gungahlin Hill at 652 metres, on open, undulating ground with grassland on its edges. There's not much shelter here. West-facing walls and north-facing fascias cop the worst of it, and they're usually the first surfaces to tell you a repaint is due.

Driveways, paths and paved areas in Crace are all original to the estate, and after a decade and a half they hold more grime than most people realise. A wash often makes enough difference on its own. Where it doesn't, it's the first step before any exterior coating goes on, because paint won't hold on a surface that hasn't been cleaned properly.

Why the Crace swing is different

Canberra doesn't get a mild winter or a mild summer, it gets both extremes on the same house. At Canberra Airport in 2025, the mean daily minimum was 6.5 degrees, the coldest morning was minus 7.6 and the hottest day was 39.4. Paint applied to a surface that's still cold and damp from an overnight frost won't bond the way it should, and paint rolled onto a wall baking in December sun skins over before it levels out. Both leave you with a finish that fails early, and neither problem shows up on day one.
We work the sun around the house through the day, chasing shade on exteriors rather than starting at one corner and going clockwise.
In the colder months we hold off on exterior coats until surfaces have properly come up in temperature, rather than starting at first light.
We check surface temperature and moisture on exterior surfaces before coating, not just the air temperature.
We plan exterior work for the shoulder seasons where the schedule allows, and keep interiors moving through the depths of winter.

The practical side
Working around Crace
Crace was built as one planned estate, which makes access more predictable than in older suburbs, but it brings its own quirks.
The suburb has one local centre, Crace Central on Abena Avenue, and the streets around it are the busiest in Crace. If your place is nearby, we'll work out parking and gear placement before the first day rather than on it.
Crace households average 1.8 motor vehicles each and 49.8 per cent have two cars, so driveways and kerb space are usually spoken for. Tell us what's free and we'll plan around it.
The Crace conservation zone runs from Gungaderra Grasslands Nature Reserve through to the bike path on Drooka Crescent, and carries a restricted mowing schedule to protect Striped Legless Lizard, Box Gum Woodland, Superb Parrot and Gang-gang Cockatoo habitat. On jobs backing onto that edge we keep gear, waste and washdown inside the property line.
Crace homes are newer and many are strata-titled townhouses. Where a body corporate is involved, we'll work with whatever approvals process applies before we start.
Access in and out is via the boundary roads, Gungahlin Drive, Nudurr Drive, Gundaroo Drive and the Barton Highway, so we time deliveries and loading outside the school and commuter peaks where we can.
Local-fact callout: At the 2021 Census, 65.9 per cent of employed Crace residents drove to work as the driver, compared to 59.0 per cent across the ACT.
Getting to us
Finding Sattlers Painting from Crace
We're based in Franklin, which shares a boundary with Crace. Gungahlin Drive is Franklin's western edge and Crace's eastern edge, so there's one road between us.
From Crace, head east across Gungahlin Drive and you're in Franklin. Coming the other way, we come west over Gungahlin Drive and turn in off Nudurr Drive. It's a short run either direction, which is part of why we get to Crace jobs quickly.

Questions from Crace homeowners
Our place was built around 2010 when Crace first went up. Is it due for a repaint?
Most Crace homes are now fifteen years or so into their original paint, and original builder coats on a new estate are usually a single-purpose job, not a long-life system. We'd want to look at the west and north elevations first, since those carry the most sun. Some homes need the whole exterior, plenty just need the exposed sides and the fascias.
Can you paint through a Canberra winter?
Interiors, yes, all year. Exteriors we're more careful with. Overnight frosts mean surfaces need to come up in temperature before we coat, so winter exterior work happens on a shorter daily window. We'd rather tell you that up front than rush a coat on and have it fail in two years.
We back onto the grassland near Drooka Crescent. Does that change anything?
It changes how we set up, not what we do. That strip is part of a conservation zone protecting threatened grassland species, so we keep equipment, offcuts and any washdown inside your boundary rather than spilling onto the reserve side.
Our place is a townhouse under a body corporate. Can you still do it?
Yes. About 15.5 per cent of Crace dwellings are townhouses or semi-detached. Where an external repaint needs body corporate sign-off, we'll give you what you need for the approval and schedule around it.
Do we need to move out while you're painting inside?
Almost never. Crace homes are large enough that we can work room by room and keep the rest of the house liveable. We'll agree the running order with you before we start so you know which rooms are out of action and when.
