Your local Kaleen painter
Kaleen sits on the eastern side of the Belconnen district, bordered by Baldwin Drive and Ginninderra Drive, with Giralang, Lawson, Bruce and Lyneham as neighbours. It's a suburb of freestanding homes, and the 2021 Census shows almost every dwelling here is a separate house. Many are on streets named after Australian rivers, running off Maribyrnong Avenue.
This page covers our interior painting, exterior painting and pressure washing across Kaleen. We work right through the Belconnen and Gungahlin districts, including nearby Watson, so Kaleen is a regular run for us.
Kaleen was gazetted in 1974. Plenty of owners have stayed put since: close to 40% of homes here are owned outright, against about 27% across the ACT. Homes that have been looked after for decades deserve prep that suits their age, not a quick coat over the top. That's especially true where a home was built or refurbished before 1990, which we cover further down.

What we paint in Kaleen
Most of our Kaleen work is on freestanding family homes, so the jobs tend to be whole-house interiors, full exteriors, or a clean-up before the paint goes on. Here's a quick look at each. The full detail sits on our main service pages.

Kaleen homes are bigger than most in Canberra, with nearly half having four or more bedrooms. That means more rooms, hallways and doors to plan around. We work room by room so you can keep living in the house while we paint, and we leave each space tidy at the end of the day.
Local-fact callout: The average Kaleen home has 3.5 bedrooms, compared with 3.1 across the ACT (ABS 2021 Census).

A freestanding house means every side gets painted, along with the eaves, fascias and trim. Whether your place is near Maribyrnong Avenue or backs onto Ginninderra Drive, we prep each wall properly before any coat goes on. We also ask about the home's age first, because older materials change how we prep.
Local-fact callout: 91.2% of Kaleen homes are separate houses, against 63.2% across the ACT (ABS 2021 Census).

Driveways, paths and exterior walls collect grime over the years. A proper wash before an exterior repaint gives the new paint a clean surface to bond to. We also wash on its own when a driveway or path just needs freshening up.
Local-fact callout: 22% of Kaleen households have three or more cars, compared with 16.4% across the ACT, so driveways here see plenty of use (ABS 2021 Census).
Why an established suburb is differenT
Kaleen was gazetted in 1974 and built out through the 1970s. That matters for prep. WorkSafe ACT says a home built or refurbished before 1990 is likely to contain asbestos material. Painting prep involves sanding, scraping and sometimes drilling, so it's the stage where an older home needs the most care. We handle that part properly instead of rushing to the colour.
Practical adjustments:
We ask when your home was built, and whether it's been renovated, before we quote any prep work.
Anything we suspect, we don't sand, scrape or drill. We stop and recommend a licensed assessor checks it first.
We pressure wash exteriors before repainting, so the new coat goes onto a clean surface rather than years of grime.
We plan exterior work around Canberra's hot summers and cold winters, so coats go on when the surface is ready.

Local-fact callout: Kaleen was gazetted as a suburb on 15 January 1974.
🏖
Honest-caveat callout: No one can tell from the street whether a home contains asbestos material. If there's any doubt, it gets checked properly before prep starts. We don't guess.
The practical side
Kaleen's layout is mostly quiet residential streets, but a few things shape how we run a job here.
School traffic: UC High School Kaleen is on Baldwin Drive, with Kaleen Primary and Maribyrnong Primary on the suburb's streets. We time van arrivals and deliveries around school drop-off and pick-up.
Shops: Maribyrnong Avenue is the main street and carries both of Kaleen's local shopping strips. For homes near them, we plan parking so we're not crowding shoppers.
Freestanding homes: Most Kaleen jobs are on separate houses. Access to the sides and back usually means side paths and backyards, so we sort gates, pets and garden beds with you before day one.
Townhouses and units: For the smaller number of townhouse and unit complexes, such as those on Baldwin Drive, we're happy to work with your body corporate on approval and timing.
Weather: Canberra summers are hot and winters are cold, so we schedule exterior work for the right part of the day and the season.
Local-fact callout: UC High School Kaleen on Baldwin Drive takes students from Kaleen, Giralang, McKellar and Lawson.
Getting to us
Our workshop is in Franklin, on the Gungahlin side of the Barton Highway, so Kaleen is just across the district line from us.
We come down Gungahlin Drive to the Barton Highway interchange, then cut into Kaleen along Ellenborough Street. There are no long arterial runs or town-centre traffic in the way, so we can be on site early.
Kaleen painter FAQs
It can. WorkSafe ACT says homes built or refurbished before 1990 are likely to contain asbestos material, so we ask about your home's age before quoting any prep. If anything looks suspect, we won't sand or drill it. We'll recommend it's checked by a licensed assessor first.
Yes. With UC High School Kaleen and the primary schools nearby, we plan arrivals and deliveries around drop-off and pick-up times. That keeps us out of the busiest part of the morning and afternoon.
We can, and it often makes sense to do both. Washing before an exterior repaint gives the paint a clean surface, and the driveway and paths come up looking fresh at the same time.
Both. Most of our Kaleen work is on freestanding homes, but we also paint townhouses and units. Where a body corporate needs to sign off, we work with them on scope and timing.
Very close. We're based in Franklin, just up Gungahlin Drive, so Kaleen is one of the quickest trips we make. Robert runs every job personally.
