Retail shop painting, Canberra

Shop painters in Canberra, from shopfront to stockroom

A shopper makes up their mind before they step inside. Faded shopfront paint, chipped door frames and grubby walls make that decision harder than it should be.

Inside, the wear builds fast. Trolleys clip skirting boards, stock gets dragged along walls and change rooms collect marks. Back-of-house areas slide too, because nobody’s looking.

We’re Sattlers Painting, a fourth-generation family business based in Franklin, near Gungahlin’s town centre. We’ve painted across Canberra and Queanbeyan for 20+ years. Our retail shop painting in Canberra starts the way all our work does, with careful prep before any colour goes on.

Canberra’s retail is spread out. There are the big centres, like the Canberra Centre in Civic, Westfield Belconnen and Westfield Woden. There are strips like Lonsdale Street in Braddon, Manuka and Kingston. And there are the local shops in nearly every suburb.

Each setting asks for something different. A centre tenancy comes with landlord and centre rules. A street-facing shopfront takes Canberra’s hot summer sun and hard winter frosts. A new fitout needs every wall finished before opening day.

Good retail painting is as much about planning as paint. Where does the stock go? How are areas sealed off? What do customers see while the work is happening? We sort those answers out before we start.

The retail headaches

What makes shop painting hard to get right

Most shop owners aren’t worried about the colour. These are the parts that keep them up at night.

"We can’t shut the doors to paint."

Every day the shop is closed or half covered in drop sheets is a day of lost sales.

"The fitout has an opening date, and it won’t move."

The painter is the last trade in, and if they run late, the whole launch slips.

"The centre has its own rules."

Approved hours, presentation standards and sign-offs from centre management come before the first coat.

"Paint ends up where it shouldn’t."

Shopfront glass, display fixtures, stock and new flooring all need protecting, and cleanup isn’t optional.

"It’s looking tired again already."

Trolleys, stock and steady foot traffic chew through cheap finishes in high-wear spots.

Our approach to shops

Retail shop painting that’s planned before it’s painted

We treat a shop repaint as a small project, not a quick weekend job. Before we quote, we walk the space with you. We look at how customers move through it and work out which areas can be done when. You get a clear plan, a clean finish and a shop that looks cared for.

  • Worked in sections. We paint one zone at a time and keep the rest of the floor tidy and usable, where the layout allows.

  • Built into your fitout program. We agree the sequence with your builder or shopfitter early, so paint is scheduled into the job rather than squeezed in at the end.

  • Centre requirements sorted first. We go through your centre’s works approvals and presentation standards with you before the first coat goes on.

  • Glass, fixtures and floors protected. Shopfront glass, displays and new flooring are masked and covered, and we leave the space clean at the end of each day.

  • Finishes chosen for foot traffic. Entries, counters and change rooms get washable, hard-wearing coatings that hold up to daily wear.

Retail Shop Painting in Canberra

Inside and out

What our retail shop painting covers

Retail is one of the building types we cover under our Commercial Painting service, and shops bring their own mix of surfaces. Some get handled by staff all day. Others get judged by every person who walks past. Here’s what we take care of.

Shop Front Retail Store Painting

What we paint

  • Shopfronts and facades. Frames, fascias, entry doors and signage backing panels, prepped and painted to stand up to Canberra weather.

  • Sales floor walls and ceilings. The main trading space, painted in sections so the shop can keep presenting well during the job.

  • Display walls and painted fixtures. Feature walls, painted shelving and display joinery, finished to suit your branding colours.

  • Change rooms and counters. High-wear spots that take daily knocks, coated with washable finishes that clean up easily.

  • Back-of-house. Stockrooms, staff rooms and amenities. Many shops have an office space out the back too, which we paint to the same standard as our Office Painting work, so the whole tenancy matches.

  • Doors, frames and trim. Everything around the openings, from service doors to skirting boards.

How it works

1

Walkthrough

We visit the shop and look at the surfaces, the layout and how your trading day runs.

2

Quote and plan

You get a written quote with the scope and the order we’ll work through each area.

3

Approvals and booking

We line up centre approvals or your fitout program, then lock in dates.

4

Protect and prep

Glass, fixtures, stock and floors get covered. Surfaces are cleaned, filled, sanded and primed.

5

Paint in stages

We work zone by zone and leave each area clean at the end of the day.

6

Final check

We walk the shop with you, fix anything you spot and take everything away with us.

  • Local considerations: Canberra winters bring frosty mornings, and exterior paint needs dry surfaces above a minimum temperature to cure properly. So winter shopfront work gets planned around the warmer middle of the day. Summer brings the opposite problem. Strong sun fades darker shopfront colours faster, especially on north- and west-facing frontages. Indoor centre tenancies avoid most of this, which is why we price each shop on its own conditions.

Who’s working in your shop

A family painting team you can trust with your shop

Letting a trade into your shop means trusting them with your stock, your fitout and your customers’ first impression.

🛡

Four generations of the trade

Painting has been passed down through our family for four generations, and our team was trained by a European master craftsman. It shows in the prep you won’t see and the finish you will.

👤

Licensed and properly insured

We hold ACT licence 118644C and carry $10M public liability cover. Centre managers and landlords often ask for proof before work starts, and we can supply it upfront.

🕐

Tidy by habit

Clients regularly mention how clean we leave a site. That matters even more in a shop, where your customers see the work in progress too.

Canberra roots

A family business that’s grown with Canberra

We’ve lived and worked in Canberra for more than 20 years. In that time, we’ve painted homes and businesses across both new and established suburbs, from Gungahlin’s newer streets to the older parts of Woden and the Inner South. We’re based in Franklin, so a shop in Civic, Belconnen or Tuggeranong is a regular drive for us, not a trip out of our area.

The business has grown the old-fashioned way. Our owner learned the trade from his family and from a European master craftsman, then started out on his own when his father retired. Since then, we’ve trained a number of apprentices who’ve gone on to build careers of their own. Today the team is still family, with the next generation learning on the job.

Everything a centre manager or landlord might ask for is ready before we start. That includes our ACT licence number, a current certificate of currency for our $10M public liability cover, and a written quote showing exactly what’s included.

What Canberra clients say about our work

Retail painting questions

Questions Canberra shop owners ask before booking

Can my shop stay open while you paint?

Often, yes, depending on the size and layout of your shop. In larger spaces, we work in sections, sealing off one area at a time while the rest stays open for trade. In a small single-room shop, that’s harder, so we’ll talk through the options with you at the walk-through.

Can you match our brand colours?

Yes. Give us your brand colour codes or a physical sample, and we’ll have the paint tinted to match. We’ll put a test patch on site so you can check it under your own shop lighting before we roll it out.

Can you give our centre manager proof of insurance and licence?

Yes. We hold ACT licence 118644C and carry $10M public liability cover, and we can supply a certificate of currency before work starts. Whether your shop is in the Canberra Centre, a Westfield or a local suburban centre, we’ll work to its approval process.

What do we need to do before you start?

Not much. Clear stock and small items away from the walls being painted, and let us know about any centre rules or fitout dates. We take care of masking glass, covering fixtures and floors, and all the surface prep.

How long will the job take?

It depends on the size of the shop, the surfaces involved and how the work is staged, so your written quote sets out the timeframe for your job. Exterior shopfront work in a Canberra winter can take longer, because paint needs dry surfaces and warmer temperatures to cure properly.
